These terms apply when you use How Much VAT?. By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use it.

What this site is

It is a free tool that tells you how we read HMRC's published guidance on the VAT liability of printed matter, and a VAT calculator. It is general information about the rules. It is not tax advice, it is not a substitute for advice, and using it does not create a professional or advisory relationship between you and Tenfold Ltd.

Every answer names the paragraph of HMRC guidance it rests on so you can check it. The notices we work from are listed on the about page.

What this site is not

  • It is not HMRC, and it is not endorsed by or connected to HMRC.
  • An answer is our reading of published guidance, not a ruling. HMRC can take a different view of a particular supply.
  • It covers the VAT rate on printed matter. It does not cover registration, returns, partial exemption, imports, or anything else in your VAT affairs.
  • It answers on the item, using the facts you give it. A real job can turn on facts the tool does not have, including what the item is for, how it is supplied and what it is supplied with.

Relying on an answer

Before you rely on a rate for an invoice, a VAT return, a quotation or any other decision with money attached, check it with your accountant or with HMRC. You remain responsible for the VAT you charge, reclaim and declare.

Accuracy

We take care to get the answers right and we check HMRC's guidance for changes every day. We do not promise that the site is accurate, complete or current, that it is available without interruption, or that it is free of errors. Guidance changes, and there may be a period after a change during which answers have not yet been worked through.

If you think an answer is wrong, email hello@wearetenfold.com with the item and, if you have it, the HMRC paragraph you think applies. We would rather be told.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Tenfold Ltd is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, this site. That includes VAT charged, reclaimed or declared in error, assessments, penalties, interest, loss of profit, loss of business, loss of contracts and loss of data, whether the loss is direct or indirect.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be excluded or limited under the law of England and Wales.

If you use this site as a consumer rather than for business purposes, nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.

Using the site properly

You agree not to:

  • present the answers as HMRC's own, as official, or as advice given by us to a third party;
  • use the site in a way that damages it or interferes with anyone else's use of it, including automated requests at a rate that places an unreasonable load on it;
  • systematically extract the content to build or populate a competing product or database;
  • use the site for anything unlawful.

Content and rights

The writing, design, data structure and illustrations on this site belong to Tenfold Ltd and are protected by copyright. You may read, print and share pages for your own use, and quote from them with a credit and a link to howmuchvat.co.uk.

Material drawn from HMRC notices is public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0, and remains Crown copyright.

Where we link to GOV.UK or any other site, we are not responsible for its content and a link is not an endorsement.

Availability and changes

The site is free and we may change, suspend or withdraw it, or any part of it, at any time and without notice. We may also change these terms. The version on this page is the one that applies, and the date it last changed is at the bottom.

Law

These terms and any dispute arising from them are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring proceedings in your own jurisdiction.
